Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall visited Brunei

11/1/2008

The British High Commission announced that Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall visit to Brunei was a success. Their official two-day visit to Brunei started from Friday 31 October 2008.

At the reforestation project in the Badas reserve area, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales planted the 1,000th tree. The Badas reserve area is part of the Heart of Borneo Initiative which aims to preserve 220,000 square kilometers of rainforest through a tri-country partnership of Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia.

While in the reserve forest, the Prince met the main movers behind Brunei's conservation work, both inside and outside of government, and talked to local school children about their involvement in the ISB Million Trees project and wider environmental advocacy.

The Prince and The Duchess also had an audience with His Majesty The Sultan of Brunei, Her Majesty Raja Isteri and Her Royal Highness Pengiran Isteri and later hosted to an official dinner at the Istana Nurul Iman.

On Saturday, The Prince and The Duchess met students and staff at UBD (Universiti Brunei Darussalam), which has strong links with a number of British Universities, including the University of Wales, of which HRH is Chancellor.

During the visit, The Prince presented certificates to 26 Bruneian graduates who have graduated from courses at University of Wales Institute, Cardiff over the last two years. His Royal Highness also delivered a speech before the certificates presentation.

The Prince and the Duchess also saw a workshop for students on Islamic art techniques run by the Prince's School of Traditional Arts where they both tried their hands drawing. The school is a charity located at The Prince's Foundation in Shoreditch. The workshop was one of a series by PSTA, highlighting Britain's Islamic credentials and promoting inter-faith dialogue.

Their Royal Highnesses travelled to the British Garrison in Seria where they met soldiers and their families as well as seeing for themselves some of the equipment and training techniques used for both desert and jungle warfare. His Royal Highness is the Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Gurkha Rifles.
