Forests, flora and fauna in Brunei
Brunei Darussalam is home to swamp and hill forests. Mangrove , freshwater swamp and peat forest can be found in the swamp forest. Tropical heath forest, mixed dipterocarp forest and montane forest can be found in the hill forests.More than 30 bi-ecotypes can be found in Brunei.
Brunei is home to 100 non-flying mammal species, of which nearly half are rodents. Among the most interesting mamals in Brunei is the proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus).
Another very interesting mamal is the tufted ground squirrel (Rheithrosciurus macrotis), which is around 3.5 cm long and has a long bushy tail.
Over 300 resident bird species are native in Brunei Darussalam.
The estuarine crocodile ( Crocodylus porosus ) and the false gharial ( Tomistoma schlegelii ), which are two types of crocodiles can be found in rivers, coastal areas or around lakes.
